Today Warner Brothers announced as they would be "Lead[ing] the Way with [a] Fully-Loaded, Connected Viewing Experience Offering Downloading, Streaming, Bonus Content, Music, Games, Soundboard and Seamless Social Media Integration" for iPhone, iPod and iMac.
They launched this by offering five minute teasers of two of Christopher Nolan's greatest spectacles 'The Dark Knight' and 'Inception' – two excellent films, which in my opinion, deserve to be seen on the big screen. I can't imagine their Oscar nominated sound designers and mixers being all too happy hearing their creations through a portable device's tinny speakers, but surely having their work noticed by (even more of) the public at all is reward enough?
This kind of debate is nothing new. Vinyl to CD (with sidesteps into cassette, eight track and minidisc) was the big one that came first. Some audiophiles still swear by their record decks. Others curse their size. But many more are listening to music that they may never have been able to before because it's now portable on MP3 – its company on the morning commute, a distraction at the gym, background while you're working. But then MP3 and the ease of downloading illegally threatened the music industry. Then the Kindle gave books their marching order. Will 'App Editions' of films drown out the common cinema? I doubt it.
To appreciate the likes of 'Inception' and 'Avatar', you need that 'wow factor' that studios bank on with their initial advertising. We see buildings fold above us, tribes battling in colourful 3D. The cinema seat and the darkened picture house act as a vice. You can't get up, pause the film and run an errand – it has its own meticulously orchestrated rhythms, different to a book's chapters or an album's tracks.
But I'm ahead of myself. Warner Brothers aren't taking away from cinemas and Blu-rays, they're adding to it, and this could be the way forward into relatively new territory. MP3s took away our album art, the feel of the case and (arguably) some of our sound quality without giving much back. These filmic apps are making a wise move by bridging two solid, established and incredibly popular mediums – film and social networking – and offering some exclusive treats for those who give it a shot.
They're opening up new doors of communication with real time Facebook/Twitter feeds and bonus content such as never-before-released tracks from the 'Inception' score and three hours of additional content for 'The Dark Knight'. Naturally, you have to pay to unlock the whole film and some features, but the foundation is growing to get more people talking about film.
Warner's press release, mailed to me this morning, follows below some of the screen shots from the iPhone edition of 'Inception':
