The first image of Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer in 'The Lone Ranger'

'The Lone Ranger' almost didn't happen, after some epic calls for budget cuts by Disney shut the production down. Shaving tens of millions from its already $200m+ budget has finally set the cameras rolling on Johnny Depp's return to family-friendly studio films. With his old 'Pirates' producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore verbinski on board, this Disney pic will be huge.

However, this isn't the 'Lone Ranger' that some of you will remember. Instead, it's got Depp's trademark gothic twist and more of a focus on previously sidelined sidekick Tonto (Depp) than the man of the title himself, the Lone Ranger aka John Reid (played by 'The Social Network' star Armie Hammer).

Bruckheimer leaked this first shot of Depp and Hammer in full costume:

With William Fichtner as the bad guy and a supporting cast of Helena Bonham Carter, Tom Wilkinson and Barry Pepper, you can expect 'The Lone Ranger' to gallop onto screens by May 31st 2013.
