In TROLL HUNTER, we witness a frightening tale of the mythical creatures we all know as trolls. One of the most giant and fearsome creatures known to mythology, trolls have posed a large threat to humans in many films in the past. This feature takes a look at a few of the troll’s rivals for the scariest monster—the deadliest mythical creatures around.
Griffins
This mythical creature has the body of a lion and the head of an eagle. Because the lion was thought to be the king of the beasts and the eagle was thought to be the king of the birds, the Griffin was considered the most powerful and magnificent creature. With bird-like talons at the end of each limb, this creature is sure to fight off any threat that comes its way.
Vampires
Vampires are creatures that thrive off of the blood of others, regardless of whether the creature is alive or dead. Much different from our attractive friends in the TWILIGHT series, folkloric vampires were usually described as bloated, purplish and dark in colour—most likely the result of freshly drank blood.
In fact, when vampires were seen in their cloaks or coffins, they were often reported to have blood dripping from their mouths and noses. Just like any other beast, these vampires are out to survive, and they’ll suck your blood if necessary—watch out!
Werewolves
Human by day, werewolf by night—these creatures have the ability to shift forms either by a bite from another wolf, or by a curse. Popularly associated with changes under the full moon, these creatures have superhuman strength and senses.
In the event that you see a human with meeting eyebrows, curved fingernails and a swinging stride... keep calm and RUN!
Orcs
Usually portrayed as misshapen humans, orcs are some of the most brutal mythological creatures around. Although they may be larger or smaller than humans (but with green skin), they are known to travel in groups large enough to swamp any human.
They can be spotted riding boars and wolves, and their fighting skills are brilliantly sharpened, so don’t let their size fool you—especially the smaller ones.
Ogres
Another species of humanoid creatures, ogres are large, cruel and monstrous beings. Unlike our friends from Shrek, they are said to be especially aggressive and to feed on humans.
Also contrary to our modern view of ogre-like creatures, many folkloric drawings and paintings of ogres depict them with large heads, abundant hair and a beard. Like Shrek, they do have a ravenous appetite and strong bodies, but we won’t take our chances befriending ogres other than Shrek and Fiona!
Cyclops
Of the class of mythological creatures known as giants comes the next dangerous humanoid you may want to do your best to avoid: the cyclops.
More commonly known in its singular form, a cyclops is a symbolic figure of ancient times with one single eye in the middle of its forehead. Larger than life and with the ability to take substantial amounts of pain before suffering, these mythical creatures are a force to be reckoned with.
Dragons
One of the most popular types of mythological creatures, dragons belong to a large class of creatures that include serpents and reptiles. Generally dragons are depicted as having large wings and an underground lair or cave, but some speculate that the Chinese dragon can even take human form.
Although some dragons, particularly Chinese dragons, are considered to be benevolent creatures, most of them are considered malevolent, especially in a European context.
Trolls
Trolls often dwell in isolated areas near mountains, rock formations, and the like. Sometimes they are known to live in couples as father-daughter or mother-son combinations, but they are generally sighted alone. Troll hunters will agree that they are usually not friendly or helpful, either. Mostly depicted as being drastically larger than the typical person, trolls are large threats to our fellow human beings.
