Summary: 'A Royal Affair' is a sumptuous period drama that will appeal to fans of 'Barry Lyndon', 'Amadeus' and 'Dr Zhivago'

For those not initiated with Danish royal history, this film is a rollicking glimpse at a world of backstabbing, passion and madness controlled by people you wouldn't always expect.

Based in fact, the plot sees somewhat disinterested doctor Johann Friedrich Struensee (Mads Mikkelsen) be appointed to serve the deranged king (an irrestible Mikkel Boe Følsgaard as Christian VII). The powers that be want him sedated and used merely as a formality to getting their own laws passed. Also in the mix is Christian's new wife Caroline (Alicia Vikander) who quickly becomes a headstrong force as well.

Naturally a love triangle emerges. Although perhaps "love" isn't the correct word. "Power" could be better suited. Together the doctor and queen effectively start a revolution for the people but the shadowy politicians that surround them and even the people themselves aren't as responsive when they begin to suspect that the king is being played.

Director Nikolaj Arcel has a wonderful eye for characterisation. The trio of performers mesh expertly allowing Arcel to focus more attention on detail of the period. The cinematography and set design is immaculate. This is a film that feels just right. Forget how accurate the history is, 'The Royal Affair' is as handsomely staged a romp as you could hope for.
