Summary: Heavier on drama than the trailers would have you believe, 'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' affords great vintage performances from great vintage players.
'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' is an ensemble piece in the style of 'The Big Chill', bringing a bunch of people from a similar generation together as they've past their prime and felt life's hardships.
They'll discuss the passing of generations, the humour behind their changing lives and get scared by the uncertainty of the future. A starry cast is almost a certainty and 'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' delivers.

As British retirees checking into the titular crumbling Indian hotel for a change of pace, Judi Dench plays a widower, Maggie Smith is a grumpy racist only here for cheap medical care, Bill Nighy and Penelope Winton are unhappily married, playful Ronald Pickup and Celia Imrie refuse to accept their age, and Tom Wilkinson has recently retired and is returing to his childhood town to set a wrong finally right. 'Slumdog Millionaire' star Dev Patel rounds out the cast as the hotel manager who is battling against his overbearing mother and the shadow of his long-gone father all the while trying to woo his girlfriend whose brother doesn't approve.

There's plenty going on but Ol Parker's skillful script from Deborah Moggach's novel gives them all enough time and a good meaty scene each to sink their teeth into. There's more drama here than you'd expect, but it adds weight to the characters without bogging them down.
It all ties itself up too neatly at the end with numerous character arcs all completing within 20 minutes of each other but you'll forgive that. 'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel' deserves at least a one night stay.
