Summary: Excellent film noir 'You Only Live once' teams master director Fritz Lang with star Henry Fonda. Still fresh, thrilling and invigorating 75 years on.

"Fine world... First they kill the chicken. Then Taylor eats the chicken. And then they kill Taylor" - the musings of a death row chef as Taylor (Henry Fonda) awaits his last meal. What a line.

Blackly stylised dialogue coupled with moodily expressive cinematography are what film noirs are all about, and Fritz Lang's underseen 'You Only Live Once' is a great example of the genre.

Its redemptive plot hinges on that old standard of the con trying to go straight. Fonda, one of America's all-time best actors, makes you believe it. He's a snarling, short tempered man of violence here - a far cry from his final great role in weepy romance masterwork 'On Golden Pond'. Fans of the nice guy actor will find this impossible to resist.   

Behind the camera during his exile from Germany is 'Metropolis' director Fritz Lang, perfectly blending into the predominantly American noir genre while infusing it with all the harsh angles and shadows that are the cornerstones of German Expressionism.

'You Only Live Once' doesn't have anything new to say but as I made clear at the start of this review it says what's on its mind very well indeed.

Studio Canal have put the effort in for its 75th anniversary, treating the viewer to a long audio interview with Lang from 1962 (80 mins), a 23-minute interview with a philosophy/film professor and 10-minutes worth of behind the scenes footage (the type of which is incredibly rare for a film of this era).
