The Lost City

Cert: 15
Contains strong violence and real images of executions
Runtime: 2 hours 24 mins

Andy Garcia stars and directs his latest film, THE LOST CITY. The film is Mr. Garcia's dramatic and historical romantic tribute to his native Cuba. Written by the Cuban master novelist, Guillermo Cabrera Infante, the film follows the tale of one family, three brothers and a beautiful woman whose fates are dramatically tied to that of a nation caught up in revolutionary turmoil.

In 1958, the city of Havana is the Paris of the Caribbean. There, a bright sun burns by day while passion and music burn by night in the City's elegant clubs. But all is not well in the lush and pleasure-driven, tropics. A modern-day Nero Hddles while his nation simmers; the dictator, Fulgencio Batista, keeps a firm hand on Cuba’s throat. In an attempt to re-establish the 1940 Constitution, pacifist intellectuals and activist politicians passionately lobby for change; in the streets, a desperate urban underground abandons the pacifist political process for arms and assassination. Meanwhile, in the dense cane-fields and remote jungles of the eastern mountains, the revolutionary M26 forces of Fidel Castro and Ernesto "Che" Guevara (their full intentions unclear) organize and prepare to move on Havana. As they all tighten the noose on the unstable Batista, the tyrant’s secret police become increasing more desperate to hold on to power.

In the midst of the trouble in the island paradise, Fico Fellove, the owner of Havana's classiest music nightclub, El Tropico, struggles to hold together his family, his club, and the love of a woman. Still, as life goes on, El Tropico will become more than just a stage for popular entertainment. In the spirit of the author, Guillermo Cabrera Infante, Bill Murray depicts an ex-patriot American gag writer. The character's ironic commentary reflects the club as a microcosmic stage where national historic events play out like a theatre of the absurd. Although he wishes to remain apart from the fray, Fico is slowly drawn into the historical events unfolding around him. Havana and Cuba are changing forever and his family is not spared the wash of history. It is through Fico’s eyes and ears that we witness a family disintegrated, a culture vanish and a people transformed, a way of life dies, but the heartbeat of its music lives on in exile where Fico Ends solace in the one thing never betrayed him.

An epic adventure of historic intrigue and timeless romance, THE LOST CITY is filled with the music, color and glamour of pre-Revolutionary Cuba. Along with Andy Garcia and Bill Murray, the HIm’s key roles feature Dustin Hoffman as the enigmatic mobster Meyer Lansky, and Spanish film star and Lancome supermodel, Inés Sastre, as Aurora Fellove, the film’s central metaphor for an impossible love of a woman, a country and a Lost City.
