The Royal Ballet: Manon

Running Time: 155mins

A young girl desires love but is corrupted by wealth in Kenneth MacMillan's erotically charged ballet. Teenager Manon is on her way to a convent when she happens upon her roguish brother Lescaut. He's carousing at an inn with some louche Parisian pals and promptly decides to auction his sister. The highest bidder is Monsieur GM, but she runs off instead with handsome, charming young student Des Grieux. When the couple run out of money, she finds herself tempted by Monsieur GM's promises of a life of wealth and luxury. For his acclaimed three-act ballet, the great choreographer Kenneth MacMillan returned to Abbe Prevost's notorious novel set amid the brutality and decadence of 18th century Paris. Utilising music by Massenet, he brought vividly to life the complex character of Manon, who finds herself torn between love and the desire for money and attention. The ballet returns to Covent Garden in its 40th anniversary year.
