'Braveheart' the TV series in the works

When Mel Gibson fought for his freedom in 'Braveheart' back in 1995, he took home two Oscars for directing and producing one of the year's biggest hit films. Now, the source material is being revisited in a new TV version.

Mick Davis, whose Rufus Sewell fronted 'The Eleventh Hour' was cancelled after one season in 2008, has created the shown from an idea by Kent Dalian and Seoras Wallace, who worked on Gibson's film.

The show will reveal the backstory to the William Wallace character that Gibson memorably played.

STV Director of Content Alan Clements said in a statement: "This was a turbulent time in Scotland’s history, in which William Wallace had a starring and pivotal role.

"We plan to delve deep into his character and explore his passions, bringing parts of history to life in a spectacular and raw depiction.

"With all eyes on Scotland in the current political climate, this also seems to be a very appropriate time to tell this story in more depth."

Gibson's potential involvement looks slim on this one.
