Confirmed: Joss Whedon will return to write and direct 'Avengers Assemble 2'

After 'Avengers Assemble' grossed nearly $1.5 billion at the box office, it's now surprise that Disney/Marvel were keen for screenwriter and director Joss Whedon to return for the sequel.

And now it's been confirmed that not only will he take on that double role, he'll also create a "Marvel-based" TV series for the network ABC, Disney chairman Bob Iger has confirmed.

Whedon was apparently a little uneasy about returning. While this could've just been a ploy to secure a bigger paycheque, Whedon voiced his concern that it would be "an enormous amount of work telling what is ultimately someone else's story."

An official statement from Marvel Studios reads: "Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015. As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel’s The Avengers 2 as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC. He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe."

Disney picked up Marvel for around $4 billion three years ago and since then they've been going full tilt squeezing the film rights dry.

Up next is 'Avengers Assemble 2', 'Thor 2: The Dark World', 'Iron Man 3', 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier', the 'Nick Fury' movie and even a supergroup film 'Guardians of the Galaxy' all expected within the next five years.
