From Thor to Vacation: The rise of Chris Hemsworth

Chris Hemsworth has worked hard to make a name for himself over the years and is now considered one of Hollywood’s hottest actors. His latest film Vacation is out on Blu-ray and DVD now, so to celebrate we have taken a look at his rise to fame.

Hemsworth was born in Melbourne, Australia and is one of three boys. In his late teens he was in various television programs including Neighbours and Marshall Law. But his big break in television came when he was cast in Home and Away. He originally did not got get the part he auditioned for but luckily he was called back for the role as Kim Hyde. He starred in 171 episodes from 2004 – 2007.

He got his first taste of working in film when he was cast in Star Trek as George Kirk in 2009. Although it was a small role it gave him a big push in to being recognised by Hollywood. He then was cast in the crime-thriller Ca$h with his performance being highly praised by the director, Stephen Milburn Anderson. Anderson said, "Here's a guy who is young, has the right look, is a very good actor and, let's face it, he's beautiful. I was very impressed.” In 2009 Hemsworth also completed filming the award winning horror film, Cabin in The Woods. Hemsworth plays Curt, an athletic college student who gets caught up in a ritual designed to kill everyone involved.

His major break in Hollywood came when he won the part of Thor an arrogant hammer wielding god and was thrust into the world of the Avengers. He won the part despite being up against his younger brother, Liam, and for the role he gained 20 pounds of muscle. Hemsworth starred opposite A-listers including the beautiful Natalie Portman and Tom Hiddleston. He reprised this role two more times for the Avengers series and then once more for the sequel to Thor, Thor: The Dark World.

In 2015 he showed his versatility as an actor when he starred in comedy Vacation as Stone Crandall. He plays a flirty husband from Texas and even gets shirtless! His scenes are without a doubt hilarious, and he stars alongside Ed Helms and Leslie Mann. His most recent film In the Heart of the Sea is based on the book of the same name, in which he plays a shipwrecked sailor. For the role he went on a diet of 500 calories a day – that is dedication!

Not only is he good looking and an amazing actor, he can also dance! Hemsworth impressed the ladies when he appeared on Dancing With the Stars Australia in 2006 and came in 5th place. He also has awards to his name including a Teens Choice Award for ‘Summer Movie Male’ and a People’s Choice Award for ‘Favourite Action Movie Star’.

Coming up for the Hollywood star is the much anticipated movie Ghostbusters and the third instalment to Thor, Thor: Ragnarok. He will also be reprising his role as the Huntsman from Snow White and the Huntsman in the spin off film The Huntsman: Winter’s War. Although he is a dad to three children, he shows no signs in slowing down his career he worked so hard to build.
