Gary Oldman set for 'Robocop' remake role

We just reported that Tom cruise has signed on for a 'Magnificent Seven' reboot and now MGM have another classy actor for another remake - Oscar nominee Gary Oldman will play one of the leads in the studio's 'Robocop' update.

Oldman won't be playing the slain/resurrected Detroit cop Murphy/Robocop (that role goes to Joel Kinnaman from TV's 'The Killing') but will instead be playing a character called Norton.

Norton is the scientist responsible for creating Robocop which means that while he is playing another man of power Oldman may not be hamming it up in his usual villainous ways (ala 'Leon', 'Air Force One', 'The Fifth Element', 'The Book of Eli' and so on).

Kinnaman has himself spoken out that he wants this 'Robocop' to be an adult film, brimming with violence just like the original and not watered down to secure a family-friendly age rating.

He said: "I sincerely hope they’re going for an R rating, because I can’t imagine how RoboCop could be PG-13. That would be a huge mistake. If I have any say in it, I will fight very hard for it. It has to be violent."

The original lead role was played by Peter Weller. The remake is due on screens by August 2013.
