Hugh Laurie in talks for 'Robocop' villain role

Hugh Laurie, fresh off the back of his hugely successful medical drama show 'House' drawing to a close, is in talks to join the 'Robocop' reboot as the main villain.

Sony/MGM have been filling the cast with big names so far: 'The Killing' star Joel Kinnaman will play Alex Murphy - the slain police officer who becomes robotic enforcer Robocop - and Abbie Cornish is the frame as his widow, while Gary Oldman will play the scientist in charge of rebuilding Murphy. If that wasn't enough, Samuel L Jackson will be his larger than life self as a powerful media mogul who attempts to extort Robocop's potential to his own ends.

That leaves Laurie's potential role. If he takes the part, he will play the shadowy head of technology firm Omni Corp who owns a stake in Robocop and hopes to thus own a significant portion of the entire police force.

While the general plotline of Paul Verhoeven's 1987 cult classic will remain, the characters and world is being altered to fit a more modern dynamic.

Jose Padilha is helming the project which is shooting in the summer.
