Michael Fassbender to star and produce in 'Assassin's Creed' game adaptation

Star Michael Fassbender is continuing his impressive career upswing by signing on to star and produce in an adaptation of popular game 'Assassin's Creed'

After Sony failed to pick up the rights to game publisher Ubisoft's acclaimed property, Ubisoft created their own development arm to break into films.

Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of the specially-founded Ubisoft Motion Pictures, told Variety: "Michael Fassbender was our first choice. He's an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor."

"We're open to re-discuss with the key studios once the production package is finalised."

Since 2007, 'Assassin's Creed' has shifted 30 million units, so there's an inbuilt audience for what could well become a franchise, unless it gets panned like 'Hitman' and 'Max Payne' which is always a possibility.

The games are historically-rooted open world stealth adventures that see the player take control of an assassin who finds himself in the midst of social and political upheaval with the odd conspiracy thrown in. The third official game is set to arrive late October.

One of the hottest names in Hollywood following his turns in 'Shame' and 'Prometheus', Fassbender will co-produce the movie project with his Dmc Film partner Conor McCaughan.
