'The Artist' cleans up at the BAFTAs

Black and white silent drama 'The Artist' was the big winner at this year's BAFTAs, taking home Best Film, Best Actor (Jean Dujardin), Best Director, Best Original Screenplay (both of those went to Michel Hazanavicius), Best Cinematography and Best Costume Design.

The acting categories had few surprises with Meryl Streep winning the Actress gong for portraying Margaret Thatcher in 'The Iron Lady' while 'The Help' star Octavia Spencer was awarded Best Supporting Actress. Not at the ceremony to receive his award was Best Supporting Actor Christopher Plummer for his work in 'Beginners'.

'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' won Outstanding British Film and Adapted Screenplay. 'Senna' had an impressive showing, picking up Best Documentary (surprising given that Martin Scorsese was up for his George Harrison doc) and the race car driver film also went to the podium for Best Editing - it's very rare for documentaries to be nominated outside their category, let alone win.

Director Paddy Considine and Producer Diarmid Scrimshaw received the award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for their first feature film Tyrannosaur, based upon the short film Dog Altogether that won them the Short Film BAFTA in 2008.

Special awards went to John Hurt for his Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema while The Fellowship, the highest accolade which the Academy can bestow, was presented to Martin Scorsese following tributes by Max Von Sydow, Christopher Lee and Robert De Niro.
