Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes divorcing after five years of marriage

Hollywood power couple Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are set to divorce after five years of being married.

'Rock of Ages' three-time Oscar nominated star Cruise, 49, and 33-year-old 'Batman Begins' starlet Holmes have a daughter together - Suri, aged six.

Holmes' lawyer Jonathan Wolfe got out the first statement to People magazine: "This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family.

"Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."

The stars married in the 15th-century Odescalchi Castle outside of Rome back in 2006 after Cruise popped the question atop the Eiffel Tower. While it was Holmes' first walk down the aisle, Cruise was on number three: His first was to actress Mimi Rogers (1987-1990) and his second was 'Days of Thunder' co-star Nicole Kidman (1990-2001) with whom he adopted two children.

A media frenzy followed the relationship between Cruise and Holmes, reaching a fever pitch in May 2005 when he declared his love for Holmes and famously jumped up and down on a couch on the set of 'The Oprah Winfrey Show'.

In terms of his career, Cruise's years with Holmes saw his once untouchable stature in Hollywood decline. A string of underperforming films and a departure from his contract with Paramount left Cruise adrift but last year's 'Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol' had him back on top.

Cruise recently spoke about Holmes in Playboy, stating that: "She is an extraordinary person, and if you spent five minutes with her, you’d see it. Everything she does, she does with this beautiful creativity. She’s funny and charming, and when she walks into the room, I just feel better.

"I’m a romantic. I like doing things like creating romantic dinners, and she enjoys that."
