Tom Cruise to saddle up for 'Magnificent Seven' remake
MGM are continuing to mine the riches of their huge back catalogue of films with the latest remake news coming in the form of a 'Magnificent Seven' revisit with Tom Cruise donning some six guns.
'The Magificent Seven' was a huge hit for MGM in 1960 with Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, Yul Brynner, Robert Vaughn, James Coburn, Brad Dexter and Horst Buchholz giving winning performances as the titular heroes under John Sturges' direction. Eli Wallach played the bad guy while Elmer Bernstein's memorable score took home the Oscar.
The film itself was a remake, Americanising Akira Kurosawa's epic Japanese masterpiece 'Seven Samurai' from 1954 - a film which consistently ranks high among the greatest films ever made.
Both films revolve around the idea of down-and-out warriors for hire who agree to defend a small village from tyranny in the face of a much stronger enemy force, requiring them to come up with a winning strategy and bond as men before doing battle.
MGM is also rebooting 'Carrie' and 'Robocop' with remakes before this one. 'The Magnificent Seven' has only just been announced and it isn't confirmed which of the conflicted cowboys Cruise will play. He could even opt for the villain role.
Given the packed nature of his current calendar, the film will be a few years off yet. Before that, Cruise is starring in an adaptation of Lee Child's thriller novel 'One Shot' as well as Joseph Kosinski's dystopian sci-fi film 'Oblivion' and the Doug Liman action movie 'All You Need is Kill' and a spin-off from 'Tropic Thunder' that expands on his priceless cameo performance as vulgar studio exec Les Grossman.
If that wasn't enough, the three-time Oscar nominee is also being sought by Clint Eastwood for the male lead opposite Beyoncé in another remake of 'A Star Is Born', and there are rumours of 'Top Gun 2' preparing for take-off as well. Before all that Cruise will be seen in his first musical 'Rock of Ages' (trailer HERE).
