This year's Golden Globe nominations have been revealed, throwing up an odd mix of award-friendly contenders ('The King's Speech', 'Black Swan', 'The Social Network' among the heavy hitters) and some other quirky choices (Johnny Depp's double nod for critically divided 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'The Tourist') as well as some glaring ommisions (Leonardo DiCaprio is snubbed for his work in 'Inception' and 'Shutter Island' while Ben Affleck's 'The Town' only managed a supporting actor nom for Jerermy Renner and The Coen Brothers' 'True Grit' didn't even get a look in).
'The Office' star Ricky Gervais will be presenting the ceremony for his second year in a row.
The Globes are typically seen as a less seriously minded form of the Oscars, but a solid indicator of things to come as the awards season gets into gear.
Jennifer Lawrence appears to be a safe bet for Best Actress for her work in the indie thriller 'Winter's Bone' although Natalie Portman's obsessed ballerina from 'Black Swan' and Annette Bening's turn in 'The Kids Are All Right' could split the vote away from her.
Best Actor looks to be a tough split between Colin Firth's stuttering King-to-be in 'The King's Speech' and Jesse Eisenberg for 'The Social Network' while James Franco's tortured performance in Danny Boyle's '127 Hours' is gathering pace.
David Ficher's biopic of the founders of Facebook 'The Social Network' is currently scooping the lion's share of the film gongs, picking up three major awards from the coveted National Board of Review - Best Director (Fincher), Best Actor (Jesse Eisenberg) and Best Picture.
Christopher Nolan's groundbreaking sci-fi actioner 'Inception' appears to have stalled on the awards circuit so far. Sure to be a shoe-in for the technical awards at the Oscars, pundits are speculating that the writer/director/producer is working his way up to some recognition after walking away largely empty handed for his prior work on the critically acclaimed 'Memento', 'The Dark Knight' and 'The Prestige' in recent years.
